In March 2019, arete Australia partnered with the Balamu Community Outreach Program (BACOP) to support the Balamu Football Academy in Wasawa, Uganda, providing football kits for the children taking part in the program.
Founded by Moses Wambale, the academy was established to give children from Wasawa and surrounding villages access to football, education and important life skills.
For many families in these communities, access to secondary education can be difficult. Through the academy, children who show commitment and sporting ability can be considered for bursaries to continue their education in nearby Mukono, helping create opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.
The academy is open to both boys and girls and provides structured football training, professional coaching and access to equipment. Beyond the game itself, the program helps children build confidence, develop social skills, learn responsibility and strengthen their self-esteem.
