One in Five funds new Depression and Suicide Prevention Research Fellowship

28th March, 2025

arete Australia is proud to support One in Five, whose fundraising is helping advance important mental health research through a new Research Fellowship into Depression and Suicide Prevention at Monash University’s Department of Psychiatry.

For more than 20 years, One in Five has raised funds to support research into mental illness, working with leading researchers to improve understanding, treatment and outcomes for people affected by mental health conditions.

The new Depression and Suicide Prevention Research Fellowship will support a Monash University scientist to investigate identified molecular targets associated with depression, anxiety and related conditions. The research will explore more personalised approaches to mental health treatment, with the potential to better understand and address the underlying causes of depression.

The Fellowship responds to the continuing impact of suicide in Australia, where an average of 8.6 people die by suicide each day. Through investment in research, One in Five aims to help accelerate the development of new treatments and create better outcomes for individuals and families affected by mental illness.

One in Five Chair Lou Wardlaw said the Fellowship represents an important opportunity to support research in an area that remains significantly underfunded.

arete is proud of our longstanding partnership with One in Five and to support fundraising initiatives that contribute directly to evidence-based mental health research.

We congratulate One in Five and Monash University on this important initiative and look forward to seeing the research and outcomes made possible through the Fellowship.
