arete Australia has completed The Peter and Ruth McMullin Beacon, a new performance and event venue at Melbourne Recital Centre in Southbank.
Located on the top floor of the Centre, the project has transformed a previously underutilised space into an intimate cabaret-style venue designed to bring audiences closer to artists and live performance.
arete delivered the fitout of the approximately 300m² space, including a new performance and function area, bar, commercial kitchen, amenities and associated facilities.
Designed by Melbourne Recital Centre’s original architects, the new venue will host a diverse program spanning cabaret, contemporary music, jazz, musical theatre and First Nations performances.
The project focused on creating an intimate and flexible performance environment while addressing the specialist requirements of audience experience, catering operations and acoustics.
The completed venue also features a new artwork bringing Look Above to life within the space, with words written by Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO and music by Dr Lou Bennett AM.
The Beacon was officially opened in August and will welcome audiences for its inaugural program from 17 September 2026.
arete thanks Melbourne Recital Centre, the project consultants, subcontractors and suppliers for their collaboration and contribution to the successful delivery of this unique new addition to Melbourne’s performing arts landscape.
