arete Australia delivered a multi-stage project at St Vincent’s on the Park in East Melbourne, supporting the Doherty Institute’s clinical research and pharmaceutical collaborations. The works involved the partial demolition and fitout of Level 2 of the Tower Block to create a hospital accommodation facility for patients volunteering in clinical trials, as well as early contractor involvement and the subsequent fitout of Level 1 of the Smorgon Wing for a new PC2 laboratory and supporting office space.

The completed facility on Level 2 provided purpose-built accommodation and operational areas to support comprehensive clinical trials. The space incorporated day and inpatient accommodation, outpatient screening areas and essential back-of-house functions. A critical element of the works was the enhancement of air handling systems to meet stringent infection control standards, an essential requirement for studies involving respiratory viruses and potential treatments for conditions such as COVID-19.

On Level 1 of the Smorgon Wing, the fitout delivered a fully compliant PC2 laboratory and associated office areas, strengthening the Doherty Institute’s capacity to conduct advanced medical research in collaboration with pharmaceutical partners. The project formed part of the State Government’s initiative to support medical research that protects Victorians and drives future growth in the health and research sectors, and was successfully completed to a high standard with all objectives achieved.
